Ten years have passed since Kenneth Omeruo, alongside Ahmed Musa, triumphed in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking a historic moment for Nigeria winning a third AFCON trophy at FNB Stadium in South Africa.
Reflecting on this milestone, Kasimpasa defender Kenneth Omeruo, in an exclusive interview with www.ckdmedia.ng.com, expressed his anticipation for another remarkable experience at the upcoming AFCON in Ivory Coast. Recalling the emotional victory earlier in his football career alongside esteemed Super Eagles players such as Joseph Yobo, Mikel Obi, and Victor Moses, Omeruo shared his sentiments about the blend of youth and experience that characterized that victorious team.
"We were determined to carve our names in history. Our team had a mix of both seasoned players and rising talents like Gabriel Reuben, Ejike Uzoenyi, Sunday Mba, Azubuike Okechukwu, Obiora Nwankwo. We seized the opportunity to represent our nation, and the rest, as they say, became part of football history," Omeruo reflected.
Recalling a standout moment, Omeruo vividly remembered the quarter-final match against Ivory Coast, where pundits doubted the Super Eagles' chances against a star-studded Ivorian team boasting talents like Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, and Salomon Kalou.
"In that unforgettable game, partnering with Godfrey Obaobona in defense, we silenced the doubts and stopped one of the world's most lethal strikers, Didier Drogba," Omeruo proudly recounted.
Looking ahead to the impending AFCON tournament commencing on January 13th, Omeruo expressed his eagerness to once again don the Green White Green Jersey and defend Nigeria's honor on the field.
His determination and recollection of past victories stand as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Super Eagles as they prepare for yet another chapter in their AFCON journey.
Omeruo has amassed over 60 caps for the Super Eagles, enjoying a decade of longevity. He will be in Ivory Coast to defend the crest of Nigeria at the Nations Cup.
