U20 Afcon Q/Final: Drawing of Lot Pits Flying Eagles of Nigeria Against Junior Cranes

February, 27 2023.

The identities of all eight second round teams, and

quarterfinal pairings of the 17th edition of the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, holding in Egypt would be revealed later today, after the conclusion of Day-3 fixtures in Group C.

In Sunday's final round of Group B matches; Uganda drew goalless with South Sudan to finish on 5 points; same tally of points as Congo Brazzaville whose final game against the Central African Republic (CAR) ended 0-0.

While South Sudan with 4 points qualified for the next round behind Uganda and Congo, who finished as joint Group B winners; joined Group A winners Senegal and Runners up, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria in sealing their qualification to the quarterfinals, on Saturday.

A drawing of lots was therefore applied to determine who Nigeria plays, as both Congo and Uganda ended their campaign tied on 5 points, and are evenly matched in other tie breakers.

Victory for Ladan Issa Bosso's Flying Eagles, seven time African Champions at this level, over Uganda on Friday, will guarantee Nigeria an automatic ticket to the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia, in May this year.

Hosts of the tournament Egypt and Mozambique could only muster a point each, in Group A and stands eliminated, along with CAR that finished bottom of Group B; meaning the team to finish 3rd in Group C, will join winners and runners up of the Group in advancing to the first knockout out phase.

Today's final round of preliminary games in Group B will see Gambia with 6 points take on the Republic of Benin (2 points), while Tunisia slugs it out with Zambia, in a winner takes all. Both games are to be played simultaneously.
