Sports Minister Inaugurates Board of National Sports Federations

The inauguration of the Boards of National Sports Federation is an important ceremony that marks the successful conclusion of elections into the Boards of National Sports Federations for the period of the next Olympic Cycle.

Following the expiration of the tenure of office for the Boards in place between 2017 - 2021, the processes for re-constituting them in line with the Olympics cycle and the National sports Federations' established Guidelines were activated, resulting in the conduct of elections for Board membership in each sport, across the six- geographical zones, and for other stakeholders.

Based on the outcome of Zonal elections, the National elections for the offices of Presidents and Vice Presidents took place in Abuja, on Wednesday, 30th September, 2021.

Speaking at the Inauguration, the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare said "The exercise was generally commended by stakeholders and appraised, to be most credible, peaceful, transparent, free and fair exercise in recent times. I therefore congratulate you all as winners, and thank the Chairman of the Electoral Committee and his team for an excellent job."

Charging the elected board members, he said:

"As Presidents, Vice Presidents and Members of your respective National Sports Federations, the task of deepening the development of the Sport under your care, now lies squarely on your shoulders, therefore team work is key to achieving the Board goals and objectives. I salute your sheer sense of patriotism, with which each of you voluntarily contested to be part of this huge national assignment, which comes without any form of remuneration. I charge you all to be absolutely guided by established processes, procedures and the Code of Governance of National Sports Federations in the discharge of your responsibilities."

"This Ceremony, once again underscores Government’s determination to open up the Sports’ Sector to public – private partnerships in order to enhance the fortunes of Sports in Nigeria, as envisaged in the spirit of the emerging new National Sports policy, and the Federal Executive Council’s reclassification of Sports as Business rather than recreation."

"As you are aware, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development's core responsibilities are focused at facilitating youth and sports development through the establishment of a conducive policy environment that provides strategic support systems and sports policy implementation among other functions.

The Ministry coordinates the formulation and review of policies and legislation in order to provide a framework for effective implementation of youth and sports programmes."

"Recall early this year His excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari granted our proposal to reclassify sports from recreation to business and the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development will, as the supervising ministry work with you to ensure we use sports to positively engage our teeming youths."

"In doing this, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development is giving you the marching order to, within six months after this inauguration begin the process of formulating your constitution in line with the dictates of your various international federations and with the inputs and guidance of the FMYSD to ensure the constitutions are domesticated to operate in tandem with Nigerian laws and our sports industry policy."

"Your constitution will be the key that opens the doors to proper sports governance, good relationships amongst partners and affiliates and development at all levels as it establishes the rules that govern your sport and ensure that they are applied with.

With the support from and supervision of the FMYSD, you have the responsibility and duty to manage and to monitor the everyday running of your sport and the organisation of events during the National Sports Festivals and the National Youth Games.

It is your duty to supervise the development of athletes practising your sport and ensure its promotion and development."

The Sports Minister reiterated that Federations must seek good relationship with government and revealed that under the new dispensation, a more dynamic and robust code of governance to which all sports federations must subscribe will be put in place.

"The Board of each Federation will be expected to adopt and bring about a business approach to its operations. To his end, Federations are expected to key into the upcoming National Sports industry policy which emphasizes the need to run sports as business and outlines how to achieve that. The tripod of Infrastructure, Investment and Incentive are in play here. The welfare of the Athlete, the partnerships with private sector, the branding of your sports, the scouting and development of new talents will help boost and create the business environment so desired."

Aquatic, Boxing, Chess, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, Deaf Sports, Fives, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Kickboxing, Rowing/Canoeing, Rugby, Scrabble, Shooting, Squash, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Traditional Sports, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Wushu-kungfu
