Sporting FC of Lagos began life in the nation's top flight on a winning note, by defeating Gombe United 2-0 in their match-day 1 encounter, played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos on Monday.
There were disagreements between the management of the privately owned club, which is just about one year old, and the Lagos State FA, managers of the stadium and it had to do with the desire of the club to brand the ground, before the game.
But this altercation and its ripple effect, completely disappeared, as the only Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side based in Lagos at present, won the game comfortably by scoring a goal in each half.
Rivio Ayemwenre put the Lagosians ahead in the 42nd minute when he connected with a header, a cross from Christian Nwoke, to beat the Gombe United keeper.
Clement Nantuam then doubled the lead in the 71st minute, and the Jewels of the Savannah fluffed a chance for Gombe United to halve the deficit, as Mojeeb Odufeso failed to convert a penalty awarded Gombe United, six (6) minutes, into added time.
With the match done and dusted, attention will now turn to the two games; Enyimba of Aba vs Insurance of Benin, and that between Rivers United and Remo Stars of Ikenne; www.ckdmedia.ng reports.
Both fixtures were stood down by the League Body to allow Insurance and Rivers United honour their continental engagements, against RS Berkane of Morocco, and Etoile Filante du Ougadougou in the CAF Confederation Cup.
