With Day 19 fixtures done and dusted over the weekend, the 2023/24 Nigeria Professional League season (NPFL) is now at its half-way mark; clubs are now busy in the transfer market, shopping for players and maybe tacticians that can reinvigorate their season, and propel them to finish their respective campaigns, stronger.
While Clubs like Rangers Int'l FC of Enugu, and Katsina United FC are already in the ever-fluid NPFL transfer market for strikers; promoted Sporting FC of Lagos have already announced the capture of two players - a striker and a defender.
And from Akure comes the report that Kennedy Boboye has been signed on to take over as Technical Adviser of mid-table Sunshine Stars.
Boboye, who has previously led Plateau United of Jos and Akwa United of Uyo to NPFL titles in recent terms, had in just six weeks taken Heartland FC from rock-bottom to within a point, and one spot of safety before he was inexplicably asked to step down from his role at the Nazé Millionaires.
The regulators of the league, have also been busy in rescheduling games that were put on pulse, mainly due to the participation of teams like Rivers United and Enyimba Int'l FC of Aba in major CAF organized, Inter-Club Championships.
One of such games, that was put on hold, will be played today at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu, between Rangers Int'l FC and Rivers United FC, Nigeria's only club, still campaigning for continental glory.
Rangers, with 25 points, garnered from 18 games are currently 10th in the log, and Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu believes for the Flying Antelopes to turn around their season for the better, they have to lay the foundation by beating The Pride of Rivers, today.
Aside today's encounter, Stanley Eguma's and his men has got three other outstanding fixtures; and the Head Coach who's also called the Fabio Capelo of the NPFL has spoken of the need of his team to approach every game, henceforth as a cup final, knowing that they have already dropped so many points, this term.
Rivers United are precariously placed 14th in the standings, with 21 points, after 15 matches, and an unlikely victory today at The Cathedral will see the 2021/22 NPFL champions climb up the log to 11th; www.ckdmedia.ng reports.
One other outstanding game, rescheduled for tomorrow pits bottom of the table, Heartland FC of Owerri against struggling Kwara United of Ilorin.
The fixture holds on Thursday, but it is not certain, where the postponed Day-18 encounter will hold; as the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri and Umuahia Township Stadium, home ground of Abia Warriors were barred by the league body from hosting NPFL matches, until their are substantial improvements, to their playing surfaces.
We can however confirm that the management of Heartland FC of Owerri have opted to host their home games at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, pending when the Imo State government is able to effect repairs on the playing pitch, and its approval by NPFL inspectors.
