Over 2000 International & Elite Athletes to Race at Access Lagos City Marathon

No fewer than 2000 International and Elites runners have been confirmed for the 2023 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

The number of the registered International and Elites marathoners, has also been confirmed by the race organizers, as a new record, for the race and in the whole of African marathons.

Making the revealation, General Manager of the Lagos City Marathon, Mr. Yussuf Alli, added that “the Elite entries would have been more, if the organisers had not regulated it to a barest size", over a week ago.

He said the moderation was geared towards an effective and efficient management of the race.

"The large size was expected, as it’s one of the effects of staging a World Athletics sanctioned Gold-Label road race, and the Organizer, Nilayo Sports Management is fully ready for it.”

Alli added the former African Record holder in men's long jump, further stated that, majority of the Elite athletes are from East Africa, North Africa, West Africa, Europe, Asia and South America, and

“out of the pool of registered foreign legion of Elite runners, the organisers officially invited 47; out of which 28 are male and 29 are female world class athletes.

They are to lead the bunch of other first class runners in the race, While the rest will compete to chase the Gold-Label status as they continue in their quest to garner requisite points to attain firstclass Elite status as they grow professionally.

Yussuf Alli further stated that utmost desires of the organisers, Nilayo Sports Management Ltd to have the Lagos City Marathon attain the status of Platinum Label, will be boosted if two male of the Elite athletes can finish the race under 2 hours 10 minutes and three female athletes can replicate it, under 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Alli who was Team Nigeria's Chef des Mission to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, in Birmingham also quipped that, the 8th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon runners, would have their running numbers in front and their names at the back of their competition jerseys.

“This's to avoid any form of controversy, as clearly stipulated by World Athletics, there will also be the photo finish device at the finish line of the race at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.

As a build up to the race, Expo for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will begin at the Teslim Balogun, Surulere, which will have registered runners picking up their running kits and numbers, running from January 23 to February 2, two days to the race on February 4.

The organisers will also have series of exhibitions towards the success of the race. Health talks and several other events geared towards the sucessful organisation of the race.

The start line for the Gold-Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is the National Stadium, in Surulere, for the full Marathon. reports.

The marathon will also have a 10km component, for the first time; and it would see Elite athletes compete, as part of the requirements for 10km Gold-Label race status.
