Doma United and Bendel Insurance were the big winners; but Kano Pillars will surely claim the result of the day, having won the Arewa derby against arch-rivals, Katsina United, at the Sani Abacha Stadium, in Kofarmata, Kano, on Saturday.
On a day only three games were played, with the remaining seven fixtures scheduled for Sunday;
Andrew Majalisa 21" and Charles Terwar 58" were the scorers as Doma United FC won their first home game at the Pantami Stadium, in Gombe by comfortably beating Bayelsa United of Yenagoa 2-0.
Similarly, Bendel Insurance, who were making their domestic bow of the season, needed an own goal from Gali Falke and a sublime finish in the 78th minute, by Evans Ogbonda to thrash Gbenga Ogunbote tutored Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan 2-0, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Elsewhere, in the North-West, Kano Pillars began life afresh in the elite division, after a season in the Nigeria National League (NNL) with a hard fought 1-0 victory over fellow promoted side, Katsina United, thanks to a 27th minute winner from Ibrahim Mustapha.
Remarkably, no side has been able to win on the road, after the first thirteen (13) fixtures of the season; unlike last season, when the opening match between Akwa United and Insurance of Benin in Uyo, was won 2-0 by Insurance of Benin.
Day-2 fixtures will continue on Sunday with seven fixtures; including the encounter between Sporting FC Lagos, and Akwa United, in Uyo; Remo Stars versus Enugu Rangers, in Ikenne-Remo; and the tie in Kotangora, between Niger Tornadoes of Minna and Rivers United.
In other games; Plateau United will host Heartland FC of Owerri at the new Jos Stadium; whilst the battle of stats between Lobi Stars and Sunshine Stars, will be hosted in Lafia.
