Nigeria Duo, Ndidi & Iheanacho Begin Life In English Championship With Hard Fought Victory

August, 6 2023.

Super Eagles of Nigeria duo, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho began life in the English second tier league on a winning note, as Leicester City came from behind to defeat Coventry City 2-1 on Day-1 of the Championship.

However, it was Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who scored both goals, as Enzo Maresca began his reign as new Leicester manager with a hard fought win and three points.

Both midfielder Ndidi and forward Iheanacho were all through the summer and even now linked with moves away from Leicester City's King Power Stadium, following their shock relegation from the top flight at the end of the last season, but none of such rumoured moves materialized.

The 2016 Premier League Champions are aiming to return to the Premiership at the first time of asking under former Manchester City Head Coach Maresca, but they were made to work hard by a Coventry side who could have had more than the one goal they scored when skipper Kyle McFadzean’s close-range header gave them a deserved lead.

With Leicester struggling for a foothold in the game, midfielder Dewsbury-Hall equalized with a header before netting a spectacular winning goal, three minutes from time.

Both sides named four debutants in the starting line ups following their summer transfer activity, but Coventry manager Mark Robins chose to leave new record signing Haji Wright, a USA international, on the bench after completing his £7.7million move on Friday.

He later made an appearance with 19 minutes to go, as Maresca gave the Leicester captain’s armband to veteran striker, Jamie Vardy www.ckdmedia.ng reports.

Vardy was replaced by Iheanacho in the 75th minute and Leicester equalized 2 minutes later, before scoring the late winner. On the other hand, Ndidi started the game for the Foxes, but was subbed off in the 62nd minute.
