..Rivers Utd, Lobi Stars & Akwa Utd To Slug It Out In Group B...
Barely a month ago when their fiercely fought clash at the NPFL Super Six ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw, the nation's two football top guns, Enyimba of Aba and Remo Stars of Ikenne will rekindle their rivalry after being drawn in the same group of a season ending tournament, Naija Super 8, which like the NPFL Play-offs, will hold in Lagos.
At Thursday's late evening draw ceremony for the groupings and fixtures of the novel tourney, Enyimba FC, Remo Stars and the Nigeria National League (NNL) pair of Katsina United aka Changi Boys who ousted Kano Pillars at the zonal play-offs in Eket, and Sporting FC of Lagos, who like the Changi Boys are in the race to win promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) via the NNL play-offs that will start on Saturday in Asaba, were housed in Group A.
Dethroned NPFL Champions, Rivers United are clearly the team to beat in Group B, which also habours 2020/21 NPFL Champions, Akwa United of Uyo, Lobi Stars of Makurdi who were the weeping boys of the NPFL Super Six and Yobe Desert Stars of Damaturu, which eliminated Gombe United in the North-East playoff.
Over 37 million Naira in prize money are to be won at the money spinning tournament, which the Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye led Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been mandated to oversee.
Prior to the draw conducted by Super Eagles legend, and a former African footballer of the year, Victor Ikpeba, ably assisted by Ini-Ogbong Okon, an ambassador of the play-offs and player of Federation Cup kings, Bendel Insurance of Benin, the identities of the two wildcard teams; Akwa United and Sporting FC of Lagos were unvailed on live cable satellite television.
All matches of the inaugural edition of the Naija Super 8 tournament, which is fully sanctioned by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are to be staged at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, from July 7th-16th, 2023 www.ckdmedia.ng reports.
