At least ten clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), were in pre-season action on Saturday, as preparation for the twice postponed 2023/24 campaign, threw up some mouthwatering fixtures, even for fans, across the country.
Reigning nine-time NPFL champions, Enyimba FC of Aba, and Katsina United who are back to the top flight, after one season in the lower division, however stole the spotlight, having recorded the biggest wins of the day.
Enyimba of Aba roasted Bayelsa United 4-1, while Katsina United comfortably trashed Jigawa Golden Stars of Dutse, 3-0 in an Arewa derby; www.ckdmedia.ng reports.
On a day all the matches rained goals, only the encounter between North East rivals, Doma United FC of Gombe and Wikki Tourists of Bauchi ended goalless.
The pre-season struggles of Enugu Rangers under new Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu however continued, as the Flying Antelopes could only draw 1-1 with little known Alpha FC; same as Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan which drew 1-all with another promoted side, Sporting Lagos FC.
The Oriental derby of a sort, between Heartland FC of Owerri and Abia Warriors of Umuahia also ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
As things stand, both the NPFL Board, headed by Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have been tight lipped on a new date for the league; as intense consultations and negotiations are said to be happening, backstage; where the clubs, league body, NFF and potential sponsors are all involved.
