Drama, Joy, Laughter and Tears on Final Day in the NPFL, As Rivers United Gets Coronated

The 2021/22 NPFL season ended in a dramatic fashion on Sunday as Katsina United got relegated on the final day while Shooting Stars escaped by the whiskers.


New champions Rivers United got coronated as League winners for the first time since the amalgamation of Sharks and Dolphins to give birth to the Pride of Rivers.


Plateau United finished second, securing a CAF Champions League position while the toast of the league, Remo Stars finished third to pick a CAF Confederation Cup ticket ahead of big shots like Enyimba, Rangers Int'l, Kwara United et al.


On the bottom end of the table, Katsina United were the surprise of the night as they were swallowed by the murky waters of relegation with Dakkada FC and Shooting Stars both beating the drop on the last day of the season. Both sides were more or less bookies favourite to get relegated.


Giant powerhouse, Kano Pillars also got relegated, as they would now be playing in the NNL for the first time in 22 years. The Kano-based club lost 6 points to deductions for various offenses in then course of the season.


Rivers United picked up the league's championship crown as they finished over above all others.


Rivers United's Chijoke Akuneto emerged the league'6s top scorer with 19 goals. He matched the record set last season but ex Akwa United Forward Charles Atshimene and ex Nassarawa goal king, Silas Nwankwo.
