Chukwuemeka Obioma, Imade Osarenkhoe and Robert Mizo Neck to Neck in Race for 2023 NPFL Golden Boot
April, 8 2023.
Just as clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) are jostling for places in the season ending Super Six, the race for the Golden Boot of the regular season of the nation's top flight has also gathered some momentum.
With just 5 match-days to wrap up the regular season, Enyimba of Aba striker, Chukwuemeka Obioma leads the goal scorers chat with 9 goals.
Obioma's tally is just one goal better than the haul of 8 goals netted by Imade Osarenkhoe of Bendel Insurance of Benin and Robert Mizo of Bayelsa United of Yenagoa.
The three leadership scorers are followed by David Okoromi who has been prolific for Niger Tornadoes of Minna, since the commencement of the second stanza, with 5 goals, another scorer with four goals is Lobi Stars of Makurdi's midfielder, Joseph Atule.
Surprisingly, the nine goals by Obioma who was signed from rival club, Abia Warriors of Umuahia, has not lifted eight time Champions Enyimba International who are at present 4th in Group A of the Abridged League.
Conversely, the 8 goals netted by Osarenkhoe who was the leading scorer of the Nigeria National League (NNL) last season, has been key to Insurance of Benin staying top of the Group A log with 27 points, and remaining unbeaten after 13 match-days.
Robert Mizo of lowly placed Bayelsa United, is the only other player in the top flight giving Obioma and Osarenkhoe a good run for the title. www.ckdmedia.ng reports.
At present, the Prosperity Boys are precariously 8th in the Group B table, with 12 points from as many games, and to boost their chances of escaping the drop, he will need to keep scoring, while hoping his other teammates weigh in with a few more goals.
Finally, to answer the big question, "who wins with the 2022/23 Golden Boot, between Obioma, Osarenkhoe and Mizo could go down to the wire, and would almost certainly have to wait until the final match-day. In all of this it should be a thrilling contest, and only time will tell.
