CAF Inter-Club: Brave Insurance of Benin Crash Out; Joins Ousted Enyimba FC & Remo Stars

September, 30 2023.

Bendel Insurance of Benin are out of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup, having lost 0-1 last night, away to 2021 winners of the competition, RS Berkane of Morocco, last night, at the Stade de Municipal, in Berkane.

The first leg, second preliminary round match, played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin two weeks ago had ended in a fiercely fought 2-2 draw, after the Moroccans stormed back twice to level the scores.

Insurance who were making a return to continental football after a hiatus of about three decades, thus crashed out on a 2-3 on goals aggregate, and are officially Nigeria's third side to exit CAF Inter-Club Championships, this season; after Enyimba of Aba and Remo Stars did so in the previous round of the CAF Champions League.

www.ckdmedia.ng reports that

Oussama Lamlioui (43′) scored the match winner for RS Berkane, who made it to the Group phase of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup,

on a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Nigeria's only hope for continental football glory, now rests fully on the shoulders of Rivers United, who will host Burkinabe side, Etoile Filante du Ougadougou on Sunday, starting from 4pm.

The first leg of that encounter played in Yamaussukoro, in Côte d'Ivoire ended goalless, meaning the decisive second leg at the Adokieye Amasiamaka Stadium, is delicately poised on a knife's edge.

Up next for the Nigerian domestic cup holders, Insurance of Benin is their opening Day-1 fixture in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), against Enyimba of Aba; which was stood-down indefinitely by the league body, to allow them concentrate on their continental engagement.
