2023 Fed Cup: Fixture Congestion May Hamper Bendel Insurance Quest for Domestic Double

May, 30 2023.

Any quest by Bendel Insurance to win a rare domestic double of the Federation Cup and the League, could be hampered by fixture congestion, and its dreadful effect - fatigue on the players.

Ahead of the upcoming Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Super Six, which effectively kicks-off on Friday June 3, 2023 Insurance are scheduled to take on giant-killing NNL side, Warri Wolves in one of the semifinals of the 2023 National Federation Cup, 48 hours earlier.

Prior to this stage, two other teams that qualified for the Super Six, Sunshine Stars of Akure and Lobi Stars of Makurdi bowed out of the competition with losses in their respective quarterfinal fixtures, ckdmedia.ng reports.

Lobi Stars were dumped out by Warri Wolves, while Insurance overcame a spirited Sunshine Stars, thanks to Imade Osarenkhoe's 56th minute goal from the penalty spot in Awka.

Luckily for the Benin Gunners, the semifinal with Wolves dubbed the Bendel derby holds at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan Lagos, same venue for the Super Six.

The other semifinal pits six-time winners Enugu Rangers who despatched an ambitious Doma United FC from Gombe 1-0 in Akure, against Plateau United of Jos which ousted Kwara United of Ilorin on Sunday.

The match holds at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, in Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday, June 1, 2023 as well.
